Walter James Newmyer holds a dear place in the hearts of those who grew up in Granbury ISD, where he was a substitute teacher for 18 years. Mr. Newmyer was a substitute teacher that brightened the day of all of the children in the classes he would substitute. Prior to substitute teaching, he was a principal for 36 years.
He was known as the yo-yo man due to his incredible skill at doing yo-yo tricks. Some of his known tricks were ‘walking the dog’, ‘the flying trapeze’, and ‘the bazooka’ – where he would find someone who had never seen the trick, rev up the yo-yo and sling it towards their face, which gave them quite a scare, but to the rest of the classes’ amusement.
If his joke went misunderstood to the class, he would say “waaaah” and move his hand over his head as if the joke had flown over the students’ heads.
When a student got an answer correct, he would tell them they won a free Walmart sack, and that they could pick their prize up at Walmart.
These are just a few of my personal memories that were gained through my life in GISD. I would love to hear some of yours in the comments of our Facebook post.
Service will be held at 2PM, Sunday, October 27th, 2019 at the Seventh Day Adventist church in Granbury. 2016 Acton Hwy. Granbury, TX. 76049.
