In January of 2017, Joseph and Betty Scala were hospitalized together at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital. The hospital coordinated with the military in order for Joseph and Betty to see their daughter get promoted to Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force. That gave the couple a moment of happiness during their battles with cancer.

Joseph stated that before the ceremony, “They had to call a psychologist, they were scared to death that I was just going to blow my brains out, and I would’ve”, he told WFAA in an interview from his hospital bed. “It almost killed my wife.. She didn’t even want to go on dialysis.. She was to the point where she had maybe a month to live”. Joseph also stated that he told members at the hospital, “Just blow my brains out, I can’t do this, I’m done.”

Investigators are trying to figure out if this was a murder, or a mercy killing.
