Hood County Throwback Thursday

April 16 – April 22

Apr. 17, 1897,
Newt Gresham, captain of the Riddle rifles and editor of the Hood County Truth, saw the mysterious “Flying Jenny”, an early model airplane. He could not stand the sight of the plane, and ordered his company to fire on it. Other members of the community described it as “an airship ran by electricity”, and “A cloud of some mysterious substance with phosphorescent properties”. Newt Gresham, editor of the Hood County Truth, said it was a huge fish with wings.

Apr. 19, 1913,
B. F. Cambron of Granbury and Logan White of Weatherford wrestled for two hours at the Nutt building, ultimately leading to a draw.

Apr. 20, 1855,
A community church was built in the location that became Acton. In 1861, C.P. Hollis, builder of the first permanent store in the area, proposed the town be named after his sweetheart, Miss Acton.

Apr. 22, 1910,
The ‘Fats’ lost a game of baseball to the team the ‘Leans’. The game was lost at the bat of T. Mullins (Fats), to the run of E. White (Leans). Leans won 11 to 8.
