Relief Route to bypass Cresson Railroad crossing

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is moving forward on the US 377 Relief Route to construct a three-mile relief route west of the city of Cresson. The relief route will be a new four-lane divided highway on US 377 beginning one mile south of the intersection of US 377 and SH 171 and ending one mile north of the same intersection. It will alleviate congestion at the current at-grade crossing with the Fort Worth and Western Railroad (FWWR) rail line.

Pending Commission approval at the end of August, TxDOT will award the $61 million construction contract to Zachry Construction Corporation of San Antonio. Over the next four to six months, TxDOT will finalize right of way and coordinate with utility companies to relocate underground water, sewer, telecommunications, gas lines and overhead electric utilities ahead of construction work.

“The citizens of Hood County and the surrounding areas of the US 377 intersection in Cresson are pleased to see this announcement. The surface railroad switchyard operations make this intersection one of great unpredictability that impedes the traffic flow of  daily commuters and the intermittent motorists heading to and from the metroplex,” said State Senator Brian Birdwell. “With the growth in North Texas spreading south to Hood County and beyond, I and the citizens of Hood county look forward to starting construction and successful completion of this project that is vitally important for local and regional traffic.”

Construction on the relief route will begin early next year in coordination with a groundbreaking event. The project is estimated for completion in 2022.

“This project will reduce congestion, drive time and increase safety for drivers on US 377, which is the main commuter route linking Granbury, Cresson, Benbrook and Fort Worth,” said Hood County Judge Darrell Cockerham.
