Sheriff Roger Deeds letter to citizens of Hood County

I would like to respond to the Hood County News article titled “Number crunch” in the January 11th, 2020 issue.

I find it comical that the HCNews is trying to make me look bad by complaining about the crime rate in Hood County being down. The citizens of Hood County realize it’s a good thing when crime goes down. The HCNews has exposed themselves and their liberal agenda.

Crime is down, because I have been diligently doing my job utilizing the limited resources available to the Sheriff’s Office.

The HC News brings up the “Malone Case” where a commonsense jury from Hood County convicted Deborah Wilson and David Malone for the death of George Malone in 2009.

They also keep bringing up the Figueroa case and the photo that was printed in an issue. The photo in question was never given to my investigators. The reason why, it had nothing to do with the report Figueroa filed. Did the HCNews every ask Figueroa when was this picture taken? Apparently not!

There seems to be a pattern from the Hood County News of defending law breakers. Kathy Cruz is a big supporter of Darlie Routier, who is a convicted child killer of her two young sons. So, consider the source when it comes to her views and opinions.

As for my opponents, they have no idea how complicated it is to be Sheriff of Hood County. They seem to be stuck on investigations, but there are so many more duties as Sheriff than just investigations. Yes, investigations are important, but I am responsible for a jail, the only law enforcement dispatch operation in Hood County, Animal Control, Emergency Operations Center, Record Keeping, Patrol Duties, Educating the Public, and working with other departments in Hood County, along with State and Federal Agencies, to mention a few. Along with dealing with everyone’s daily problems that get reported.

During my time as Sheriff, we have utilized the “Targeted approach” in fighting crime. In law enforcement we deal with 5% of the public about 90% of the time. That being said, my Deputies and Investigators know who the “troublemakers” are. So, I have them target those people, because we know that they are using drugs and committing crimes. In my time as Sheriff, this has worked, and the crime statistics prove it. My office has sent hundreds and hundreds of criminals to prison and they are no longer in Hood County to victimize our citizens.

There is a big problem nation wide with recruiting new police officers. Can you blame someone not wanting to get in law enforcement, due to all the new social media attacks we endure day in and day out. We must be perfect every day and if we are not, then we are attacked. It’s a struggle to hire and retain experienced Deputies.

Therefore, I use the “Targeted Approach” in fighting crime in Hood County. It utilizes the limited resources and manpower in a more efficient manner.

Among many things, my challengers don’t understand that Hood County is not a member of the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office. All deceased people do not go for an autopsy like they would in the metroplex. Hood County is under a Justice of the Peace system and the JP orders the autopsy or if he or she is satisfied, then no autopsy is ordered.

As for the citizens of Hood County. I would like to thank each and everyone of you for your support and your ability to see through the “fake news” reports and attacks that I endure every day. I count it as an honor to be attacked on your behalf. I am proud of all my employees; I see all your hard work and commitment to your job. That’s what hurts me the most, is when my employees are attacked. When I know how hard they work to do a good job for Hood County.

God bless Hood County and God Bless America.

Respectfully, Sheriff Roger Deeds
