Granbury High School senior Mattie Weaver has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Best & Brightest Awards Second Team, recognizing her as one of the top student-athletes among U.S. high school seniors.
The AVCA Best & Brightest Award, now in its fifth year, honors high school seniors who excel both on the court and in the classroom. Nominees must meet specific eligibility requirements, including earning at least a 3.5 unweighted GPA (or a 4.0 weighted GPA) during their junior year and participating in at least 50 percent of their varsity team’s sets during the senior season. Nominations were completed in October.
AVCA recognition is awarded across three tiers based on academic achievement. First Team selection requires a 3.8 unweighted GPA (or a 4.3 weighted GPA) or higher. Second Team selection — the honor earned by Weaver — requires at least a 3.65 unweighted GPA (or a 4.15 weighted GPA). Third Team recipients maintain a minimum 3.5 unweighted GPA (or a 4.0 weighted GPA).
Weaver’s inclusion on the Second Team reflects her consistent performance with the Lady Pirate volleyball program while maintaining strong academic standing at Granbury High School. The AVCA’s nationwide initiative highlights student-athletes who successfully balance rigorous academic expectations with high-level athletic commitments.
