The postponement of the fourth annual Water Safety Awareness Day couldn’t fall to a better day.

Originally scheduled for May 18, the Brazos River Authority will now host the family-friendly event June 1, which is also the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s free fishing day across the state. Each year, the state allows a day where everyone can fish recreationally without licenses or endorsements.

So while the festivities will include plenty of fishing activities and learning experiences for children, adults can now also use the opportunity near the lake to try their hand at catching a big one.

The event was postponed due to multiple forecasts for severe thunderstorms moving through Granbury, said Lake Granbury Reservoir Manager Connie Tucker.

However, the postponement won’t change any of the fun plans scheduled for the event.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Kid Fish will be on hand for the event to work with youth as one of the many participants in the fourth annual Water Safety Awareness Day.

The fun-filled day hosted by the Brazos River Authority will kick off at 9 a.m. and run until 1 p.m. June 1 at Rough Creek Park, 2209 South Morgan St. in Granbury. Almost 200 kids’ life jackets will be given away while supplies last and the free event will feature water safety tips and water safety information.

Come visit with area Lake Rangers, walk through the Upper Trinity Groundwater Conservation District water cycle interactive trailer, and get a free hot dog and bottled water while they last. Enjoy fly fishing demonstrations with biologists from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department while K-HITS 95.3 broadcasts live from the event.

The hope is that every visitor walks away a little more informed about safely living, playing, and enjoying the Brazos River and area reservoirs.

BRA employees picked up 187 kids life jackets from Academy Sports & Outdoors for the event.

Carter BloodCare will also be on site holding a blood drive, and will stay an hour longer than the scheduled festivities to ensure everyone wanting to donate has the opportunity.

The BRA, city of Granbury, and Hood County commissioners May 3 adopted a proclamation making May “Lifeguard Your Child” month. BRA Board Presiding Officer Cynthia Flores and BRA GM/CEO David Collinsworth joined Hood County Judge Ron Massingill and Granbury Mayor Nin Hulett in the resolution signing.
